Margaret Louise Dowdy, 90, of Amarillo and formerly of Canadian, passed away on September 14, 2021 in Amarillo.
Graveside services will be 11:00 Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery with Gary Jahnel officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.
Margaret was born November 6, 1930 in Lipscomb County near Glazier to Clinton and Annie Wright. While she was in high school, her family survived the terrible tornado that hit Glazier in 1947. She graduated from Canadian High School in 1949. After high school, she was working in Fritch, Texas and saw Glen Dowdy. Margaret told her girlfriends “I just saw the man I’m going to marry and spend the rest of my life with”. On March 17, 1951 she married Glen in Gulfport, Mississippi. Margaret lived most of her life in the panhandle area. She was very active in the Pampa Band Booster Club and a Girls Scout leader when her daughter was in high school. Margaret was a bookkeeper for over 27 years, working for a couple of car dealerships and also Chambliss CPA before retiring in 1987. She and Glen loved to dance and were involved in the 45 Uppers Dance Club, where they served as treasurer and assistant treasurer for several years.
Margaret loved gardening, sewing, crocheting, and crafts. She also enjoyed canning and was known for her “wild grape jelly”. Margaret collected many things such as tea pots and anything that had to do with chickens. She was a wonderful homemaker and always had a big smile. She had a loving heart and loved her family dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and 8 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Glen E. Dowdy of the home; daughter, Yvonne Jones and husband Hugh of Smyrna, TN; son, Robert Dowdy; brother, Larry Wright of Deming, NM; and 3 grandchildren, Shannon Jones of Tacoma, WA, Brandon Jones of Austin, and Patrick Dowdy.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to a favorite charity.
