Polly Horton 92 of Canadian, formally of Higgins stepped into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, September 22, 2024, in Amarillo.
Public viewing will be 9:00 am – 8:00 pm Tuesday, September 24, 2024, and Wednesday, September 25, 2024. The family will receive visitors, Wednesday, September 25, 2024, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.
Graveside services will be 10:00 am Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the Higgins Cemetery with Gary Jahnel, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.
Juanita Pauline “Polly” Hand Horton was born to A.A. “Lonnie” Hand and Pearl Henson Hand on July 17, 1932, in Wichita County. She joined one sister and would later be joined by 4 brothers. Her birth certificate said she was an unnamed male. This would be corrected several years later when the family moved to Hemphill County. She grew up on the Mitchell Ranch north of Canadian. Polly married the love of her life, T.F. “Button” Horton, on January 17, 1949. In 1950 their first child, Sue was born also in 1950 their second child, Thomas Clayton, was born. Their third child Tom, “Jr” came in 1963.
Polly was a woman of many talents including but not conclusive, sewing, quilting, making dolls and dressing them and any kind of crafts. She was an amazing cook. Polly had a heart of gold; she loved caring for people. Her family was the center of her universe.
Polly was preceded in death by 1 son, Thomas Clayton Horton; husband, Button; parents, Lonnie and Pearl Hand; 4 brothers, Olen, Lowal, George, and Alonzo Hand, and a half-brother, Kenneth Kern.
Those left to cherish Polly’s memory are a sister, Betty Hennig Thomason of Altus, OK; daughter, Sue Brown of Canadian; a son, Tom Horton and wife Debbie of Canute, OK; 4 grandchildren, Melissa Pritchett of Canadian, Shane Clem of Shattuck, OK, James Clem and wife Jill of Canyon, Jennifer Cain and husband Cody of Canute, OK; 10 Great Grandchildren, Jordan Rector and husband Dave of Bushland, Hannah Lane and husband Chase of Lubbock, Kira Pritchett of Canadian, Courtney Hazle and husband Darin of Leander, Tristan Clem of Shattuck, OK, Shane Pritchett of Canadian, Brooklynn Clem of Tulsa, Cason Cain of Canute, OK, Aubrey Mayes and husband Caleb of Flower Mound, Jake Parker of Amarillo, Kiar Parker of Amarillo; 8 Great Great Granchildren, Namarii Goodwin of Canadian, Colt Hazle of Leander, Brielle Lane of Lubbock, Adyson Rector of Bushland, Nolan Rector of Bushland, Cooper Hazle of Leander, Mila Mayes of Flower Mound, Baylor Mayes of Flower Mound, the soon to be Baby Lane; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
