He was born in Wheeler, Texas to Eargle H and Margaret “Mattie” (Maserang) Vinson on April 16, 1933. He attended school in Canadian, Texas where he graduated in 1953. He continued his education at Texas Tech graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. While at Tech, he married the love of his life, Betty Jean Pigg, on December 26, 1954, in Canadian, Texas. They lived in Lubbock until his graduation and then they spent the next two years in Hawthorn, California. Their first child, Teresa Ann, was born during that time. For the next 34 working years, they lived in Roswell, New Mexico and Amarillo, Texas where he worked for SPS, the electric company. While in Roswell, New Mexico, Alicia Jan and David Keith were born.
George was a member of the Country Club Road Church of Christ in Roswell, New Mexico where he served as a Deacon and later as an Elder. He also helped teach one of the adult bible classes. Moving to Amarillo, Texas, he attended the Central Church of Christ and for the past several years, he was a member of the Bell Avenue Church of Christ. While at Bell Avenue, Tommy Key introduced him to the “We Care Ministry”, a group that goes all over the United States knocking doors and presenting the Gospel to all who will listen. He was involved with this ministry for about 10 years and taught many individuals. He loved reading the Bible and wanted as many as could to hear and obey it. He also went to the Neal and Clements Units and had an influence on many of the inmates.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. For the past two years, he has been unable to participate fully with his family because of his failing health. He has been on Gentiva Hospice and was in a loving private care home run by Jessica Hernanadez. We want to thank all those involved in his care. They have all treated him like their own and for that we are sincerely grateful.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Eargle and Mattie Vinson, his daughter, Teresa Ann Carey, two brothers, Dane and Charles Vinson, his son-in-law, Davis Bennett, sister, D‘Ann Farris and brother-in-law, Jim Farris.
