Ernestine “Granny” Vernon, 91, of Canadian died August 19, 2018 in Canadian.
Services will be 10:00 AM Friday, August 24, 2018 at Carmichael-Whatley Canadian Chapel, with Rickey Vernon, her son, and Rev. Matthew McCurley, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.
Mrs. Vernon was born January 13, 1927 in Friona, TX to Ernest and Nell Gatlin. She attended Friona schools and graduated from Friona High School. She married Dick Lawayne Vernon on November 30, 1943 in Clovis, New Mexico. He preceded her in death on December 3, 2017; they had just celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary. The Vernon’s moved to Canadian in 1979. Mrs. Vernon worked as the manager for Dairy Queen. She was affectionally known as “Granny Vernon”. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Canadian.
Mrs. Vernon was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister Doris Moore on November 21, 2016
Mrs. Vernon is survived by 3 sons, Verley W. Vernon and wife Delores of Woodward, Oklahoma, Rickey D. Vernon and wife Cindy of Canadian, and Wendall R. Vernon and wife Lois of Yukon, Oklahoma; 1 daughter, Nelda J. Linton and husband John of Bristol, Virginia; 9 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Edward Abraham Memorial Home, 803 Birch, Canadian, TX 79014.
