Dick Lawayne Vernon, 94, of Canadian died December 3, 2017 in Canadian.Services will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Carmichael-Whatley Canadian Chapel, with Rev. Matthew McCurley, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating, and Ricky Vernon, son, assisting. Burial will follow in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian. Mr. Vernon was born Feb. 11, 1923 in Olustee, Oklahoma in Jackson County to Hubert and Elnora Dent Vernon. He married Earnestine Gatlin on November 30, 1943 in Clovis, NM, and they just celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary. The Vernon’s moved to Canadian in 1979. Dick worked as an equipment operator for Hemphill County Precinct 2. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Canadian. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 brothers, Ted R. Vernon and Kellon Vernon. Survivors include his wife, Earnestine Vernon of the home; 3 sons, Verley W. Vernon and wife Delores of Woodward, Oklahoma, Ricky D. Vernon and wife Cindy of Canadian, and Wendell R. Vernon and wife Lois of Yukon, Oklahoma; a daughter, Nelda J. Linton and husband John of Bristol, Virginia; nine grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; two brothers, Chester R. Vernon of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Dale Vernon of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and a sister, Sue Burks of Whitehouse.Memorials may be made to Edward Abraham Memorial Home, 803 Birch Street, Canadian, Texas 79014
