Anita Ruth Hughes Detrixhe

July 21, 1927 — July 21, 2019

Anita Ruth Hughes Detrixhe was born in Plainview, Texas, on July 21, 1927, and left this life on her 92nd birthday, July 21, 2019, in Bastrop, Texas.

Services will be 10:00 AM, July 27, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Higgins with Rev. Clifford Baze, retired Baptist minister and Rev. Terry Hovey, pastor, officiating.  Burial will follow in Higgins Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley of Canadian.

She grew up in Higgins, Texas, surrounded by family and friends.  Anita married Sammy Detrixhe, also of Higgins, and moved south of town to his family farm.  There they raised three children and ran a farm/ranch operation until Anita suffered a stroke.  Due to her and Sammy’s health problems, they both moved to Silver Pines Nursing Home in Bastrop, Texas, in 2005.   After 63 years together, Sammy passed away on November 20, 2006. Also preceding Anita’s passing is granddaughter Janna Detrixhe.

Anita drove the school bus for the Patton school district; she was also the first cook at Higgins ISD. She worked on the farm in almost every capacity, from cooking for groups of over 20 to driving a tractor or a wheat truck.  She spanned the time of milking cows by hand and washing with a hand-cranked washing machine to cooking with a microwave.   She loved to serve in the church and was a nursery teacher for over 25 years, taught numerous Vacation Bible Schools, sang happily in the choir, and then served as church pianist for many years.  She loved to care for others and touched many lives with her loving spirit.

She is survived by her children;  Tom Detrixhe and wife Carolyn of Bastrop, Texas; Paula Meller of Higgins, Texas; and Mark Detrixhe of Austin, Texas, as well as grandchildren; Bonnie Harrell and husband Will of Bastrop; Carrie Kaspar and husband Kevin of Bastrop; Heath Detrixhe and wife Amy of Austin; Ryan Meller of Higgins; Heather Barham and husband Chris of Kyle, Texas; Roger Meller and wife Meloni of Arnett, Oklahoma;  and Amy Clark and husband Ryan of Blanco, Texas. Anita also leaves a host of great-grandchildren:  Shelby, Bailey, and Macey McWhorter of Austin/Bastrop; Michael Detrixhe of Bastrop; Devin and Tristan Detrixhe of Austin; Morgan and Daphna Meller of Arnett; and Jackson, Ruth and Beth Clark of Blanco, as well as one great-great grandchild, Reece McWhorter.   Anita will also be missed by numerous other family members and friends.

Memorial can be sent to Texas Down Syndrome Association, Box 3, Austin, Texas 78705.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, July 26, 2019 from 5:00-7:00 PM.
