Services for L.E. "Gene" Hughs, 88, of Memphis, TX, will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at the Church of Christ in Memphis, TX, with Tom Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Memphis, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home in Memphis, Texas. Mr. Hughs passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 in Memphis, TX. Gene was born on February 10, 1919 in Memphis, TX to the late Mr. James Emery Hughs and Mrs. Odie Belle (Stephenson) Hughs. He was a 1936 graduate of Memphis High School. He married Alma Sweatt on November 5, 1942. Mr. Hughs was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he was an anti-aircraft mechanic, serving from 1943 until 1946 during WWII. He owned and operated Hughs Battery and Electric Service in Memphis for 33 years. Upon his retirement in 1972, he continued to work as a farmer and rancher. He was a longtime member of the Memphis Church of Christ. He was also preceded in death by one brother, J.E. Hughs, Jr. and one sister, Beatrice Patrick. He is survived by his wife Alma Hughs of Memphis, TX; two sons, Exie Hughs and wife, Janie, of Memphis, TX; Neal Hughs and wife, Lana, of Abilene, TX; four grandchildren, Jason Hughs and wife, Micha, of Yukon, OK; Brian Hughs and wife, Laura, of Canadian, TX; Lin Hughs of Austin, TX and Beth Hughs of Abilene, TX; and five great-grandchildren, Sheaylan Hughs of Lubbock, TX; Riley Hughs of Montrose, CO; Hattie and Libbie Hughs, both of Yukon, OK; Harrison Hughs of Canadian, TX; and several nieces and nephews In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to your favorite charity.
