Services for Mrs. Billie Katherine Hodges Ullom, 90, of Amarillo, TX, formerly of Canadian, TX will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Danny Sanders, officiating. Burial will follow in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian, TX. Mrs. Ullom passed away Thursday, January 21, 2010 in Amarillo, TX, where she lived in the Park Central Continuing Living Center for the last three years. Billie was born January 12, 1920 in Pottsboro, TX to the late Mr. Roy Joe Hodges and Mrs. Linnie (Cowherd) Hodges. She was a graduate of Childress High School. She then went on to receive a degree in Home Economics Education from Texas Tech University. She was the home Demonstration Agent in Sherman County where she met her husband. She married Mr. James Arthur “Jiggs” Ullom Jr., on March 12, 1944 in Childress, TX. Billie was a teacher for 35 years. Thirty two years were for the Canadian Independent School District, where she taught Home Economics and Work Study until retiring in 1980. She had lived in Canadian, TX for over 60 years. She sponsored the Future Homemakers of America, where several students rose to state leadership offices and positions. Billie was a charter member of the First United Methodist Women’s Guild, an active member of her Sunday School Class and was a treasurer of the Friends of the Hemphill County Library for over 20 years. She was a founding member of the Women’s Investment club, a volunteer of the Canadian River Valley Museum and was honored for her contributions and service with a “Ladies Hat Luncheon” in 2005. Billie was dedicated to the activities of the retired Teachers Association. She made beautiful quilts and enjoyed the fellowship and shared talents of the Quilting Club. She was also a member of DAR. Mrs. Ullom was a person who loved people and enjoyed life. She was happy and seemed to always have a smile with a ready laugh. Billie was preceded in death by her husband of forty-five years on July 26, 1989, her sister, Hilda Hodges, her brother, Albert Richard Hodges. She is survived by two daughters, Jimmie Kay Falconer and husband Robert of Hinsdale, IL; Linda Jane Buchanan and husband Kenneth of Summerville, SC; five grandchildren, Jamie Catherine Falconer Sherman and husband Timothy of Willow Springs, IL; Ross Thomas Falconer of Plainfield, IL; Ryan Robert Falconer and wife Rachel of LaGrange, IL; Rory William Falconer and wife Lisa of Washington, DC; Jay Daniel Buchanan of Summerville, SC; two great-grandchildren, Ian Robert and Braden Jiggs Falconer both of LaGrange, IL; one brother, R.J. Hodges of College Station, TX; two sisters, Helen Gay of Charlotte, NC; Frances Weatherbee and husband Orville of Childress, TX; her sister-in-law, Joyce Ullom and numerous nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church, 520 Main St., Canadian, TX 79014. Hemphill County Library, 100 First Street, Canadian, TX 79014 or River Valley Pioneer Museum, 118 N. 2nd St., Canadian, TX 79014. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 25, 2010 at Hughs Funeral Home, 203 South 3rd St., from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
