Vona Brooks Benge

Vona Brooks Benge, 81, of Canadian, died November 8, 2016 in Canadian. Services will be 2:00 PM Friday, November 11, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Danny Sanders, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian. Mrs. Benge was born December 18, 1934 in Canadian and was a graduate of Canadian High School. She married Burl Benge on April 11, 1954 in Canadian. They began their marriage in Miami before moving to Canadian in 1970. He preceded her in death in 2007. Vona worked for Moody Energy for over 30 years, retiring in 2010. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and her Sunday school class. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and served on the board of directors at Edward Abraham Memorial Home. She loved to play bridge, and enjoyed helping in the kitchen at the church, but most of all, she loved being “Maw Maw” to her grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Tammy Wanamaker and husband Sturdy of Georgetown; a son, Doug Benge and wife Karlyn of Canadian; a sister, Zelda Roberson and husband Bill of Breckenridge; three grandchildren, Joshua Benge and wife Rene currently stationed in Korea, Sydni Benge of Canadian, and Cameron Benge and wife Stef of Poteau, Oklahoma; three great grandchildren, Caleb Benge, Mia Benge and Kixon Benge; a sister-in-law, Norma Brooks of Amarillo; and a brother-in-law, Buddy King of Canadian. Vona was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Brooks and Sam Brooks; and four sisters, Daphine Traywick, Connie Halson, Kay Taylor and Paulette King. Memorials may be made to Mesa View Assisted Living, 1 Teas Circle, Canadian, Texas 79014; or Hemphill County Hospice, 1020 S. 4th, Canadian, Texas 79014.
