Memorial service for Sheriff Morse Burroughs, 62, of Canadian, TX will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2015 at Jones Pavilion with Donald Hill, officiating. Cremation is under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian, TX. Morse passed away Sunday, April 19, 2015 in Canadian, TX. Morse was born February 12, 1953, in Reno, NV to the late Mr. Willis Burroughs Sr. and Mrs. Alice Robinson Burroughs. He attended schools in San Juan, CA. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Vietnam War. In the mid 1970’s, Morse was accepted into the California Highway Patrol Academy. After completing the academy he worked in the California area for a few years before moving to Dumas, TX. While living in Dumas he worked for the Dumas Police Department from July 30, 1983 until June 30, 1987. He then moved to Pampa, TX where he worked for the Pampa Police Department from August 1, 1990 until June 9, 1997and then later for the Gray County Sheriff’s office from June 15, 1997 until December 15, 2004. In 2005, he became the Chief Deputy for Hemphill County Sheriff’s Office. In 2011, he was appointed Sheriff and in 2012 he was elected to the office. He had recently begun preparations for his 2016 reelection campaign. Morse served on the Board of Directors of Tralee Crisis Center in Pampa and was a member of the Canadian Lions Club. He is survived by his brother, Willis Burroughs Jr. and wife Sharon of Roseville, CA; his sister, Christine Lewis of Amarillo, TX; his nephews, Gregory Burroughs and Kirk Burroughs and his nieces, Leigh Ann Collins and Natasha Burroughs.
