Evelyn Bender

Graveside services for Evelyn Margaret Bender, 94, of Higgins, TX will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Higgins Cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian, TX with Pastor Pat Gregg, officiating. Evelyn passed away Monday, May 12, 2014 in Canadian, TX. Evelyn was born November 14, 1919 on the family farm 6 miles south of Shattuck, OK to the late Mr. Gottfried Bender and Mrs. Eva (Ehrlich) Bender. She attended grammar school at Sunny Slope and was a 1937 graduate of Shattuck High School. She moved to California in 1939 until returning to Higgins in 1954. While living in California she worked for a defense plant during World War II. She then went to work for the Hemphill County Hospital in Canadian from the late 1950’s to the late 1960’s and later went to work for Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck as an LVN from the late 1960’s until retiring in 1982. She was a member of the 7th Day Adventist Church. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Karl, Dave and Adam Bender and four sisters, Emily Bender Griffith, Hilda Bender Wasenmiller, Mary Lou Bender Pote, and Esther Bender, and William Pote III. She is survived by her sister, Genevieve Ezell of Bovina, TX; four nephews, Larry and Roger Ezell; Max and Robert Wasenmiller; 7 nieces, Barbara Charles, Joan Horn, Marilyn Joyce Savitt, Jan Blum, Cheri Joseph, Deniese Werner and Patsy Zachary.
