Nona Elkins

Memorial service for Nona Owens Elkins, 79, of Amarillo, TX will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Boxwell Brothers Chapel with Scott Davey, officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Eller Flat Prairie Dell Cemetery in Hemphill County with Joe Hamilton, officiating. Services are under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian, TX. Mrs. Elkins passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013 in Amarillo, TX. Nona was born January 27, 1934 in Canadian, TX, the youngest of nine children to the late Mr. Henry “Cat” Owens and Mrs. Ivan (Bailey) Owens. She was a 1952 graduate of Canadian High School. She then went to work for the telephone office in Canadian until she married Richard Elkins on January 1, 1953 in Canadian, TX. They moved to Amarillo in 1954 from Canadian. He preceded her in death on March 17, 1973. Nona began LVN school in the fall of 1970 at Amarillo Jr. College and graduating in the spring of 1971. Nona worked 11 years for Northwest Texas Hospital as a LVN and then went to work for Elizabeth Jane Bivins Home for 15 years. She returned back to Canadian in 1995 and moved back to Amarillo in 1998. She was a member of West Amarillo Christian Church and later Grace Church in Amarillo. Nona especially loved to sing, to laugh, to dance and to read and write poetry. Her family remembers how she enjoyed camping and sleeping under the stars at night in the canyons around Amarillo. Nona taught her children and many of the Owens nieces and nephews how to swim. They all remember how she could always run faster than any of them. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Brice Elkins Jr., in May 1956 and her daughter, Dinah Louise Elkins on February 29, 2012 three brothers, Beecher Owens, Logan Owens and Ellis Owens and four sisters, Louise Moore, Maxine Sanders, Lolian Whaley and Beulah Irby. She is survived by two sons, Don Elkins and wife Susan of Amarillo, TX; John David Elkins of Poteau, OK; two daughters, Laurie Elkins of Dallas, TX; Sammie Mouton and husband Peter of St. Petersburg, FL; her sister, Peggy Owens Price of Grand Junction, CO; four grandchildren, Amanda Hiatt and husband Zack of Ft. Smith, AR; Ivan Elkins of Amarillo, TX; Bobby Elkins of Poteau, OK; Catherine Elkins of Guymon, OK. The family would like to thank Dr. Bruce Baker and the staff at Amarillo Diagnostic Clinic for 20 plus years of care. Many thanks to the staff and doctors of Plum Creek Specialty Hospital. We would also like to thank BSA Hospice staff for their tender loving care, guidance and support of Nona and the Elkins family.
