Private graveside services for Hazel Matney, 96, of Canadian, TX will be Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Paducah, TX with her family officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian, TX. Hazel passed away Friday, January 11, 2013 in Canadian, TX. Hazel was born September 14, 1916 in Jacksboro, TX to the late Mr. Calvin Schmittou and Mrs. Dovie (Bowden) Schmittou. She grew up with her two brothers and three sisters, and she attended schools in both Jacksboro and Paducah, TX. In 1930 while out riding horses, fourteen year old hazel met sixteen year old Hubert Wilson Matney. They married on November 26, 1933 in Paducah by Pastor Love. The newlyweds honeymooned out on the farm. After their marriage, the couple moved to McCamey to make money in the oil fields (even spent time living in the back of a pick-up and a tent). In order to move to the boomtown of McCamey, they had to sell a cow for $49. Both of their children, Clovis Velton and Peggy Jo were born during their days in McCamey. Hazel’s first job was working in a laundry for .25 cents an hour. Later they moved to Matador, TX to begin farming together. Eventually they relocated to Paducah where they farmed and raised their family. In 2002, she moved to Canadian to be near her daughter Peggy. Hazel was a member of Missionary Baptist Church in Paducah. She enjoyed fishing trips, playing 42 with her friends, and cooking noodles for her grandchildren. Going to “Mam-ma’s” house was always included your favorite food, lots of game shows, and trips to M.E. Moses for the latest paper dolls. She loved to give whatever she had to her family and caregivers. She was preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers and her son, Clovis Velton who passed away on August 18, 1949 at the age of 12 and her husband who passed away on October 21, 1988. She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Pollard and husband Jim of Canadian, TX; grandchildren, Greg Pollard and wife Tammie of Kansas City, MO and Julie Logsdon and husband Chad of Gruver, TX; her great-grandchildren, Whitney, Maddie and Matt Pollard all of Kansas City, MO and Zach, Alex and Cole Logsdon all of Gruver, TX. The family suggests memorials to Hemphill County Hospice, 1020 South 4th St., Canadian, TX 79014 or the Edward Abraham Memorial Home Activity Fund, 803 Birch, Canadian, TX 79014.
