Ellen Speed

Services for Mrs. Ellen Speed, 83, of Memphis will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, July 7, 2012 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Daniel Downey, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home in Memphis, TX. Mrs. Speed passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2012 in Memphis, TX. Ellen was born October 30, 1928 in Clarendon, TX to the late Mr. Jewell Copeland and Mrs. Virl (Prock) Copeland. She was a graduate of Hollis High School. She married Orace Speed on May 21, 1947 in Childress, TX. He preceded her in death on January 23, 1999. They moved to Memphis, TX in 1963 from Hollis, OK. Ellen worked for the Burlington Sheet Factory as a hemmer instructor. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She loved playing the piano at church, taught Sunday school and was very active throughout the church. She also loved to make crafts and was a member of the VFW auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her brother, Newell Copeland. She is survived by two sons, Tommy Speed and wife Carol of Lubbock, TX; Garvin Speed and wife Lucheryl of Memphis, TX; one sister, Zelma Kennedy of Paris, TX; 6 grandchildren, Shane Speed and wife Tricia of Tulia, TX; Joshua Speed and wife Melinda of Phoenix, AZ; Kelly Speed and wife Misty of Clarendon, TX; Kira Boyd and husband Damon of White Deer, TX; Chad Ellis and wife Melissa of Mansfield, TX; Stacey Ellis of Kerrville, TX and 5 great-grandchildren.
