A Memorial Service for Laura Mae Halperin, 85, of Memphis, TX, will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 3, 2005 at the Church of Christ in Memphis, TX, with Tom Anderson Officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Memphis, TX. Ms. Halperin passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2005 in Memphis, TX. She was born on March 26, 1920 in Port Huron, MI to the late Jack Stillwell and Gertrude Parr Stillwell. She grew up in Streeter, IL, and moved with her family to Dallas, TX in 1933. She graduated from Lamar Tech in Dallas, TX in 1935, and from the Dallas Business College in 1937. She married William G. Kakara in 1942 in Dallas, TX. Mr. Kakara was a Naval aviator, and his job as a flight instructor took them to such places as Pensacola, FL and Corpus Christi, TX. He preceded her in death in 1991. Ms. Halperin was an artist. She worked for the Museum of Fine Arts in Dallas, TX, and was the Director of the Fairmont Gallery in Dallas. She moved to Memphis, TX in 1963, and lived shortly in Taos, NM, where she owned and operated a gallery. Ms. Halperin also lived in Honolulu, Hawaii for four years. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Memphis, TX. She is survived by one son, Mike Kakara of Memphis, TX. Her body was donated to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine.
