Services for Mr. Orval “Nig” Phillips, 93, of Memphis, TX will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at the First Baptist Church with Jeffery Smith, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Memphis, TX. Nig passed away Sunday, January 15, 2012 in Memphis, TX. Nig was born April 26, 1918 in the Harrell Chapel Community to the late Mr. Ornit Phillips and Mrs. Mattie (Adams) Phillips. He attended schools in Memphis. He married Mildred Richards on March 29, 1940 in Memphis, TX. Nig was a farmer and a cowboy. He enjoyed cowboy work and especially loved his horse Shorty. He loved to play softball all throughout his life. He played for the Harrell Chapel and the Jazz teams. He played up in his later years of 70 and also enjoyed playing basketball. Nig was a deacon of the First Baptist Church where he taught the junior boys in Sunday school and the men’s Sunday school for years. He also lead the singing in adult 4 Sunday school class. He was a lifelong resident of Hall County. He is preceded in death by four brothers, Vernon, R.B., Ray and Cecil Phillips and two sisters, Ima Widener and Honeria Helm. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Phillips of Memphis, TX; his daughter, Joy Lynn Smith and husband Jerry Don of Memphis, TX; his grandson, Jeffery Smith of Wichita Falls, TX; his brother, Troy Phillips and wife Anita of Memphis, TX; his sisters, Ava Dell Clark of Lakeview, TX; Corine Henderson of Amarillo, TX; Faye Elsberry and husband Bill of Farmers Branch, TX. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Hughs Funeral Home, 514 N 10th St., Memphis, TX 79245. The family suggest memorials be made to First Baptist Church, 121 South 8th St., Memphis, TX 79245.
