Services for Herschel Adrian Combs Jr., 79, of Memphis, TX will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 6, 2011 at Hughs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Tom Anderson, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Memphis, TX. Adrian passed away Thursday, June 2, 2011 in Memphis, TX. He was born December 14, 1931 in Wellington, TX to the late Mr. Herschel Adrian Combs Sr. and Mrs. Helen (Dickey) Combs. He was a 1949 graduate of Memphis High School. He then went on to graduate from Texas Tech University in 1954 with a Bachelor of Art degree in Journalism. He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean Conflict. Adrian also received his Masters degree in Journalism from Southern Illinois University where he taught journalism for 13 years and was the business manager of the Daily Egyptian. After retiring he and his life partner Alice Jin opened a barbeque restaurant in Carbondale, IL. Adrian moved back to Memphis, TX in 2003 from Carbondale, IL. He was a member of the VFW, Memphis Lions Club, and lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, Texas Rifle Association and the Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his life partner Alice Jin. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth Combs and wife Kara of Pflugerville, TX; Kevin Combs of Wichita, KS; one daughter, Deborah Blanks of Amarillo, TX; one brother, Billy Allen Combs and wife Tanya of Memphis, TX; one sister, Patsy Welch and husband A.J. of Burnett, TX; 7 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family suggest memorials be made a favorite charity.
